Description
A play based on true events that took place in the village of Fuente Ovejuna. The residents of the free community stand up against the representative of the knightly order, the commander Gómez, who does not recognize their traditional rights, their freedom, persecutes the peasants, and rapes their women and daughters. In their defiance against violence, the villagers stand together. The author celebrates their strength and unity, morality, sense of honor, and also their right to human dignity. This extraordinary drama by Lope is published in a translation and adaptation by Otokar Fischer as the 162nd volume of the D series.
