Description

The title character of The Merchant of Venice, Antonio, is certainly not the most significant character in the play. This play is often classified as a comedy, but its strength lies primarily in the tragic character of the Jew Shylock. The strong conflict of the play, which also contains the so-called comedic thread of fairy-tale love stories, is the 'pound of flesh' dispute between merchant Antonio and moneylender Shylock. In the end, Antonio wins the dispute, but the bitterness associated with the tragic ending is part of the 'happy ending' of the play. It is published in the translation by Břetislav Hodek as the 154th volume of the D edition.
