Description
This Czech-language play, presented by Jiří Voskovec and Jan Werich at their Osvobozené divadlo (Liberated Theatre) in 1937, uses unmistakable humour and irony to address the danger of rising Nazism among Germany’s neighbours. It targets defeatism and collaborators and responds to the German tactic of staging fake attacks. The play remained relevant when Werich performed it with Miroslav Horníček in the post-war years; its humour has not aged and can still make audiences laugh today, while contemporary readers will surely find new targets for its mockery.
