Description

The play Ubu Roi by Alfred Jarry is considered a precursor to absurd drama, dada, and surrealism. It was created in 1885 as a student prank at a high school in Rennes, poking fun at the physics teacher Hébért (pronounced ébé, hence Ubu). In 1888, the students presented the farce Poláci in their puppet theater. Jarry later significantly revised the play, and in 1896, a scandalous premiere took place at the Théâtre de l'Ouvre in Paris. The main character is a fictional Polish tyrant who seizes the throne by murdering the legitimate king and is ultimately expelled from the country. Jarry later wrote several sequels to the play, one of which is Ubu Enchained. It is published in edition D as volume 127.
