The third, expanded edition of the successful publication by the renowned historian Jaroslav Šebek, released shortly after the election of Leo XIV as pope, presents the actions and legacy of the pontiffs who entered the scene in the twentieth century and have sat on Peter's throne up to the present day. The selection also includes two popes who held their office in the previous century (Pius IX and Leo XIII), but the consequences of their policies extended into the following age.

The twentieth century and the present are interesting in terms of the gradual transformation of popes from monarchs into shepherds. Moreover, the last few years have offered us a unique historical phenomenon, where visible changes are occurring at a hectic pace right before our eyes. In 2013, the voluntary resignation of Benedict XVI began to write a new chapter in modern papacy. His resignation set in motion, without exaggeration, a revolutionary development, as his successor, Francis, took the helm of Peter's boat, a pope who is extraordinary in many ways. Although we still lack a greater temporal distance, it is beyond doubt clear that his pontificate will influence those who come after him.
