Description
This Czech-language historical novel takes place in the winter of 1383, when Mikuláš Blatnický of Okrouhlá tries to secure a place for his eldest son Petr in the retinue of Beneš of Kravaře, the king’s chamberlain who resides at nearby Krumlov Castle. The position should be assured, as Beneš remains one of the kingdom’s respected nobles, but other free lords in the surrounding area have the same ambitions. Meanwhile, the young knight Jan Kostník disappears under mysterious circumstances, inflaming disputes among the neighbours around Okrouhlá. While people at the castle argue over who is holding him captive, chamberlain Beneš returns to Krumlov with his retinue. The fortunes of the local free lords, and especially the members of Mikuláš’s family, soon begin to change rapidly. The novel loosely follows the first story, Sedmý jezdec. The heroes of Okrouhlá return, their lives continue to unfold, and old wrongs from the past may finally be put right.
