Description
The book is considered one of the classic works of modern French philosophy. Henri Bergson presented the Essay in 1888 as his dissertation and published it in print in Paris in 1889. Here, he introduced the concept of "duration" ("la durée"), which captures the individual's inner experience of time, which – unlike physical time – is not measurable but qualitative. According to Bergson, to flow does not mean to move along the axis of time, but to undergo a qualitative change, to become constantly different. Bergson draws consequences from this finding for reflections on society, on the individual "self," and on freedom. He offers not only concentrated analyses of time or original insights into the problem of freedom but also reflections on the impossibility of reducing consciousness to physical states.
