Description
The talented Jewish boy Martin Wels (1925–1944) drew a calendar for the year 1941 at the age of fifteen. Before being transported to Terezín, he studied at the private art school Officina Pragensis in Prague, which produced a number of significant artists. However, his life was violently cut short by the liquidation of the Terezín family camp in Auschwitz-Birkenau on the night of March 8-9, 1944. The calendar demonstrates Martin's artistic talent. His drawings testify to the sensitive soul of a young man still drawn to boyish games and the customs associated with the individual months of the year. They exude a joyful affirmation of the wonder and colorfulness of life, even though Martin had little reason for it at that time. This makes his artistic expression resonate with us even more strongly.
