Description
Ana Teresa Pereirova (born 1958), a contemporary Portuguese writer from Madeira, gained international recognition with her novel Karen (2016). Its unnamed protagonist and narrator, a young painter, wakes up one morning in an unfamiliar house inhabited by strangers who treat her as if she has lived there forever. The character gradually becomes acquainted with her role assigned by the environment and adapts to it. She subtly diverges from her presumed original self until her initial life begins to fade away. However, it is questionable whether there was ever another life before this one. Ana Teresa Pereirova leaves the reader uncertain whether the depicted events are merely the product of the imagination of a mentally ill narrator or whether the heroine has become a victim of a conspiracy or mysterious circumstances.
