Description
This Czech-language poetry collection presents Maria Nefeli, a young, contemporary radical woman whose name has mythological associations. Although Odysseas Elytis’s poems usually draw on personal experience without directly describing real events, this work is an exception: after completing Hodno jest, he met the young woman who inspired it and wanted to write something entirely different. He lets her speak and express the worldview of her generation, seeking to understand rather than oppose her through parallel monologues in which both voices are heard. The collection is accompanied by two additional texts: one based on a 1972 interview with Ivar Ivask, in which Elytis discusses his poetry, and the speech he delivered in French in Stockholm in 1979 on the occasion of receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature, awarded a year after the poem’s publication.
