Description

This documentary novel, Moscow–Frontier, met with two kinds of incomprehension immediately after its publication in 1937. Its style deliberately crossed the boundaries imposed on so-called serious literature by incorporating elements of marginal literature to an unusual extent. This lack of understanding also reflected condemnations arising from the political interests of the Communist Party. The most notorious and devastating condemnation for Weil was titled “A Tenement-Courtyard Novel” and was written on the direct orders of Klement Gottwald by Weil’s close friend Julius Fučík. Moscow–Frontier can, in simplified terms, be described as one of the earliest critiques of Stalinism. A planned second edition was banned in 1969, and the book was not published again until 1991. The contents are in Czech.
