The first volume of Jiří Weil's journalism presents works from the author's beginnings up to his departure for Moscow in the summer of 1933, where Weil was sent on behalf of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia to work as a translator and lecturer of foundational works of Marxism-Leninism. In the Collected Works of Jiří Weil, which we are launching with this volume, three volumes are dedicated to journalism. Their scope aims to capture all aspects of Weil's original authorship in his journalistic endeavors. Only texts with a predominant news and reporting focus have been excluded from this extensive selection. Before Weil published his first novel, he had nearly twenty years of extensive journalistic activity, which is closely linked to his later fictional writing in terms of themes and, to some extent, stylistic approaches. Therefore, in the arrangement of the Collected Works of Jiří Weil, we do not separate journalism into a distinct 'division' that follows the fictional works, as can be seen in the overall arrangement of most of the author's contemporaries (the Čapek brothers, Nezval, Poláček, Seifert, Weiner), but we place the three volumes of essays within the numbering of SJW among the fictional volumes as no. 1, 3, and 8 (similarly to how the organizers of the unfinished works arranged them...
