An edition of three originally manuscript notebooks of a legendary figure in Czech cultural life. - The volume Notebooks I contains diary entries by Jiří Němec on separate sheets from 1960 and the First (August 6, 1961 - May 12, 1962), Second (May 15, 1962 – May 2, 1963), and Third notebook (May 10, 1963 – October 28, 1964). Jiří Němec kept an intellectual diary consistently for more than fifteen years, from August 1961 – prompted then by Vladimír Holan – until 1978. He recorded public activities in which he participated, as well as his reading, and then led his own reflections on both in the notebooks. The notebooks are a testament to the inner growth of their author and the external struggles in which he participated, centered around the effort for a free life in the conditions of the then communist-controlled society and for 'opening windows to Europe.'
