Description

The text of James Joyce (1882–1941) was first published in 1968 by the Frankfurt publishing house Suhrkamp. It was prepared for publication by Richard Ellmann according to the author's manuscript. Ellmann's edition is a posthumous publication of a work that the author himself never published. The manuscript, transcribed into the form of a school notebook, has no title and does not bear the author's name. The title Giacomo Joyce on the cover is written in a foreign hand. According to Ellmann, the complete record was likely created using older notes, probably in the summer of 1914 in Trieste, where Joyce lived from 1904 to 1915 and earned a living teaching English in a language school and in wealthy Triestine families. As the author of the translation and afterword further states, the poem "Giacomo Joyce is the story of a teacher's relationship with a young Jewish student, a story not unlike Kierkegaard's Diary of a Seducer."
