Description
The study On the Philosophy of History (published in English in New York in 1957 and in French in Paris in 1959) is the only work that Jacques Maritain (1882–1973) explicitly dedicated to the philosophy of history. The title of the book "On the Philosophy of History" (in English) and "Pour une philosophie de l’histoire" (in French) suggests that Maritain did not intend to write a systematic treatise on the philosophy of history, nor an introduction to this discipline in the strict sense that would map all its issues. His goal was to demonstrate the possibility and validity of certain philosophical laws that illuminate human history and make it more comprehensible to us. He deliberately limited himself to a certain number of examples of these laws and some fundamental problems related to them. In his reflections on the philosophy of history and in the choice of problems, he largely kept in mind the practical position of Christians in contemporary society and sought to develop the intellectual tools that would help them address their "temporal" problems and tasks.
