Description
The publication A Year in the Village by artist and writer Kamila Skopová was first released in 2011. Since then, alongside a new edition in 2025, this small tribute to the Mrštík brothers has also received a loose sequel in the form of a second volume. In this Chronicle of Everyday Life of Jakub and Dorotka, the author continues her previous publications with ethnographic themes and demonstrates her talent for their gentle popularization. She once again stylizes the book in the form of ancient calendars, which were a popular read in rural households. The story of two young people presents, in an accessible and readable manner, both everyday and festive life in the village during the second half of the 19th century. The narrative alternates between the young man Jakub and his wife, the newly minted mother Dorotka, recounting both ordinary and unusual events of one year. Perhaps more important than all the events of a typical year is the form of the book, which connects to ancient calendars that provided readers with not only practical information but also stories, proverbs, rhymes, songs, interesting recipes, and unmistakable illustrations.
