Interwar popular literature continues to inspire and provoke even after nearly a hundred years: sometimes it attracts with its apparent naivety, other times it captivates with its thrilling plot. At the same time, our understanding of this vast and complex landscape remains very incomplete. The book 'Reading Material: Works and Contexts of Czech Popular Literature 1918–1939' offers the first more comprehensive guide to its peaks and falls, genres and areas. In addition to eight interpretative chapters focusing on selected characteristics (genres, themes, publishing platforms) and ways of reading (gender, ideology, transfer) of popular literature, it provides a clear calendar and, importantly, twenty interpretative studies of specific texts, from which the diversity and originality of period reading emerges. Like any good guide, our book does not aim to exhaust its topic but offers many tips on where and how to explore this 'golden age' of Czech popular literature. – Published in collaboration with the Institute of Czech Literature of the Czech Academy of Sciences.
