What can images tell us about the state of today's society? The book In the Grip of Images: Visual Politics of the 21st Century presents a collection of five original essays uncovering the meanings and roles of images in shaping and negotiating key social issues of the present. The texts, supplemented by rich visual material, explore themes of visual activism, decolonization and the fight against racism, the representation of migration, media coverage of the Russian war in Ukraine, and the visual alphabet of climate change, with an effort to contextualize these topics within the Czech environment. With its accessible format, the book appeals to a broad audience and offers a way to better understand society through the understanding of the principles, strategies, and technologies of visual communication. Illustrations, journalistic photographs, amateur images from social networks, and footage from activist cameras intersect here with research and theories from the fields of visual, cultural, and media studies, anthropology, sociology, and art history, inviting us to a critical way of seeing that need not disappear with the last page of the book.
