Description
The Diary of a Teenage Girl by American Phoebe Gloeckner was originally published in 2002 and is considered one of the most important and acclaimed autobiographical graphic novels of all time. Its protagonist, fifteen-year-old Minnie Goetze, yearns for love and acceptance from those around her while grappling with her prematurely awakened sexuality. After losing her virginity to her mother's boyfriend, she begins to experiment not only with her body but also with drugs, all the while striving to develop her artistic talent. Despite the apathy of her self-absorbed mother, she fearlessly plunges into puberty, even though she does not understand the adult world that is crashing down on her from all sides and is unsure if she will ever be able to comprehend it fully and integrate into it.
The book is set in the free-spirited atmosphere of 1970s San Francisco, yet Minnie's journey toward understanding herself and the world she lives in is universal: The Diary of a Teenage Girl is the story of a young woman confused by the dissonance between what is happening inside her and what she observes in her surroundings. Acclaimed comic artist, illustrator, and writer Phoebe Gloeckner presents readers with a skillful depiction of a pivotal year in the life of a young girl.
