The scene is more vibrant than ever, with festivals being organized, extensive archives being built, and both black metal fans and art school students printing zines, despite the fact that their demise was foretold long ago. Fanzines were born in the 1930s among sci-fi fan circles, but they have since far surpassed those origins. Zinesters managed with just scissors, glue, and a cheap printer. Media theorist Miloš Hroch examines the functioning of these low-cost publications and unofficial magazines in a post-digital age in his original Czech study, where, saturated with virtuality, we return to analog media. His work introduces radical concepts to media studies and presents a new materiality of media, where touch is as important as information.
