Description
Socialist advertising is often viewed as nonsense, a contradiction, or at least a paradox. In post-war Czechoslovakia, similar to other Eastern European countries, it was, however, an established field employing tens of thousands of creative workers from various specializations, whose activities have been supported by market research, audience studies, and the effectiveness of promotional tools at least since the 1960s. The collective monograph 'Consumer Imagination of the Communist Dictatorship' approaches post-war advertising as a form of communication in which the interests of state economic policy in the fields of industry and commerce, consumer culture, the artistic world, and the changing conditions of media operations specifically intersect. The lavish publication presents both key institutions, personalities, and channels of advertising, as well as insights into the language and imagery of socialist consumer culture. – It is published in collaboration with the National Museum with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic.
