Description
Juan managed to become independent, sever family ties, and escape life in the Spanish countryside. A life in which 'nothing significant happens.' He realizes his dream of seeking better opportunities and sets off to Edinburgh, Scotland. After some time, he returns to his hometown – for his father's funeral. His only desire is to return as soon as possible to dynamic Scotland. However, Juan's sister Isabel confronts him with a reality that fundamentally and against his will changes his plans. He is forced to stay in the place he tried to escape from and take care of his sick mother. The new situation leads him to reflect on life from a new perspective and helps him find his way back to himself. The novel, with its refined language and original metaphors, as we are accustomed to from the author's previous works, clarifies the generational conflict experienced by families for centuries: on one side stands the generation of parents who sought to build at least a modest family estate to pass on to their children, and on the other side, the generation of their children with their own ideas about life, who need to distance themselves from these values and find their place in the world. As time passes, however, there is a rapprochement between the two generations, as their members are able to reflect on their lives...
