Čeština Daniela Adama z Veleslavína – Černá Alena M. (2022)

The book is dedicated to the Czech language of Daniel Adam of Veleslavín (1546–1599), an educator, historian, publisher, printer, and organizer of Prague's cultural life in the second half of the 16th century. The linguistic research is based on a clearly defined material base of texts, which were most likely authored by Veleslavín. Exceptionally, it concerns a manuscript record, specifically the autograph of Daniel Adam of Veleslavín. We use this almost exclusively for analyses of spelling and phonetics. The rest of the material base consists of printed texts, which Daniel Adam significantly influenced. These mainly include prefaces to published works, which he signed himself or with another person. Additionally, there are re-editions of older works, whose Czech Veleslavín significantly altered and corrected. We focus primarily on the description of the language; however, due to the fragmented and often disputed information about his life and work on one hand, and the resonance of Veleslavín's name in later Czech culture on the other, we also include a biographical chapter. The core of the book consists of chapters on individual linguistic levels – on spelling and typography, on phonetics, on morphology, on vocabulary and word formation, on syntax, and on style.
