Description
The first volume of the writings presents two famous novellas and a little-known novel from the period of the Slovak State from a town under Vihorlat, where a Jewish and a Christian community live side by side in an atmosphere of advancing fascization of society. In The Shop on the Main Street, which was adapted into a film by directors Ján Kadár and Elmar Klos and won an American Oscar, it is a drama of an ordinary person caught in the machinery of new orders. Similarly, in the story of an aging girl in the novella The Bride, she finds herself getting married under very unusual circumstances. In the novel From Hell to Happiness, a twelve-year-old boy is smuggled into Hungary to relatives in the belief that he will be safer there, and armed only with knowledge of pulp fiction and romance novels, he endures the horrors of war. This gripping novel, which blends tragedy, humor, and poetry, is based on a true story.
