Description
Květen is not an original poem but a genre experiment based on intertextual connections. The reworking of the canonical poem by Karel Hynek Mácha is presented in it and in the attached afterword as a "recomposition" and an attempt to apply procedures typical of translation between different languages. For some, the idea of "touching" Máj is bizarre. For others, this step provides insight into a poem that has been linguistically difficult to access for almost two hundred years since its creation. Two audiences are considered: those who are intimately familiar with Máj and follow the details of the recomposition work, and those who are just getting used to the experimental poetic language of the early 19th century. Květen, illustrated by Jan Koupil, is presented as a dialogue with the old poem. Alongside it, the text of Mácha's Máj is printed from the critical hybrid edition by M. Charypar, J. Flaišman, and M. Kosák.
