Description
In the book by Josef Kainar titled Ubu Returns and Other Plays, all original and complete theatrical or radio plays are collected, including librettos and synopses that were published or have survived as manuscripts or typescripts, or for which it has been proven that Kainar wrote them. A total of thirty-one literary works are reprinted here. The collection includes staged and well-known dramas, such as the revue Circus Tin, of which Kainar was a co-author, as well as independently created full-length plays Ubu Returns, Golden Hair, and The Late Nasreddin, alongside texts completely unknown to the public (notably another adaptation of the Ubu theme titled Ubu Continues... or the sketches Clouds, Poet and Fly, Conversation After the Concert, The Destroyed Legacy or the Fall of the Nihilist Club, The Delayed Train, Jacob's Dream, or even the scene with the characters Spejbl and Hurvínek Conversation About Poetry). Josef Kainar appears in the book as a playwright of broad talent, capable of weaving poetically rich images while also being sharply critical and scathing; however, based on his dramas, he can also be seen as an author who changed his social attitudes under the influence of historical circumstances.
