The roots of Christian politics reach back to the very beginnings of the modern political system in our countries. The Christian Democrats represent our second oldest political party, and this publication is dedicated to the centenary of its founding. The development of the party is presented here in a popularizing, clear form. Given the role that the Christian Democrats played in the past, the book represents not only the essence of the party's history but also provides an interesting perspective on Czech modern society from the interwar period to the present. After the establishment of Czechoslovakia, in January 1919, the Czech and Moravian Catholic parties united to form the Czechoslovak People's Party, one of the pillars of the first republic's democratic political system. Instead of a constructive democratic party, the Christian Democrats carved out a place for themselves despite strong criticism and accusations of clericalism and support for the Habsburg monarchy, which resonated from both the left and right sides of the political spectrum. They quickly became a recognized force and did not disappear from politics even in the most complicated periods. Under the leadership of its long-time chairman Jan Šrámek, the London exile government was formed, and the Christian Democrats actively participated in the anti-Nazi resistance.
