Description

The book contains an edition of the first grammar of Czech, known as the "Náměšť Grammar" (1533) after its place of publication in Náměšť nad Oslavou. It is a sort of working anthology, an editorial combination of two texts – a brief treatise on orthography by Beneš Optát and Petr Gzel, and a longer tract on morphological-syntactic issues written for Optát and Gzel by Václav Philomathes (cf.). The impetus for compiling the first grammar of Czech was the preparation of an innovative translation of the New Testament in Náměšť nad Oslavou (1533), for which Optát and Gzel found inspiration in the work of Erasmus of Rotterdam. The edition is preceded by a text by Petr Voit, focusing on the typographical aspects of the first edition of the Náměšť grammar, and a text by Ondřej Koupil, discussing the authors of the Náměšť grammar and its content. Both of these introductory studies are published in Czech and German. The actual edition, with a critical apparatus and ongoing comments on selected passages (ed. Ondřej Koupil), is supplemented by an index of persons, an index of biblical passages, and an index of selected example words in the published grammar.
