Description

Brno legends are intended for students of Czech as a foreign language. This publication can be used by learners at the A2 level. In ten legends, they will become familiar with famous stories from the city of Brno, which tell, for example, why a stuffed crocodile and a spoked wheel have been hanging at the Old Town Hall for years, why the bells in the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul ring at noon an hour earlier, or why one of the towers in the portal of the Brno Town Hall is crooked to the point of causing pain to the eye. The volume aims to highlight the treasures of the city's past, which sometimes exists in the shadow of its larger sister Prague, but which rightfully deserves to be called the capital of Moravia. In addition to the most well-known legends, the book also presents more obscure stories, such as the legend of the ghost that frightened a painter in the Dominican monastery. The publication is accompanied by original linocuts by the author and also includes a set of grammatical and lexical exercises for each text, a Czech-English-German-Russian glossary, and an answer key to the exercises. The volume also includes an audio CD with a complete recording of the book and a bonus song by Josef Kainar, "Stars are like daisies above Brno."
