Description
Coins, targeted, line – do you know these children's games? And what happens when innocent gaming passion becomes the only way to survive in a foreign city? French lessons provide a brief insight into the challenging post-war years, seen through the eyes of a boy who, at just eleven years old, finds himself on the brink of adulthood and must cope far from his native village with both learning and classmates, as well as a perpetually empty stomach. The main characters in this sketch from a Siberian small town in 1948, alongside the author's young alter ego, are gambling, pride, and hunger – and also French lessons with the gentle, unconventional teacher Lydia Michajlovna, who cares not only about pronunciation drills but also about the well-being of a lonely, withdrawn boy suffering from anemia.
