Sofia Podlipská is today a forgotten figure for many, although she has recently been receiving attention, particularly in the field of cultural history. The reason for historians' interest is her significant influence on shaping the cultural space of the second half of the 19th century: her personal commitment to association and educational activities, as well as her prominent involvement in the women's emancipation movement. However, this monograph offers a different perspective: it is based on the positions of literary-historical research and primarily focuses on Sofia Podlipská as a writer. To grasp Podlipská's work more accurately, the author works with the term 'literary midcult' (the clarification of the term and its specific use is extensively addressed in the introduction). Using the example of Sofia Podlipská's literary work, the process of vertical stratification of Czech literature in the second half of the 19th century is illustrated. The first part of the work is dedicated to the analysis of contemporary reception and the transformation of the literary-historical evaluation of Sofia Podlipská's contribution to Czech literature. It portrays her as a personality assessed ambivalently by both contemporary literary criticism and literary historians.
