Jindřich Chalupecký undoubtedly ranks among the most influential figures in the Czech artistic world of the second half of the 20th century, yet his position in the domestic cultural history has not been sufficiently evaluated. The presented publication aims to be the first step towards assessing Chalupecký's theoretical and critical work while also striving to raise his visibility on the reception horizon of the wider public. The book focuses on the first phase of the author's intellectual activity (the 1930s and 1940s), thereby laying the groundwork for potential follow-up research. It contains a representative anthology of Chalupecký's journalistic texts that did not appear in the collections 'Obhajoba umění' (1991) or 'Cestou necestou' (2000), thus serving as a complement to them. Furthermore, the book includes an image appendix, a significantly updated bibliography of the author for the given period, and above all, an extensive introductory study placing his thinking in the contemporary context, which is done through the correlation with the works of Zdenek Rykr, Karel Teige, Václav Černý, Kamil Bednář, or Václav Navrátil.
