Description
František Gellner undoubtedly belongs to the well-known authors in Czech literature. Although he published only two poetry collections during his short life (a third was prepared for publication but was released posthumously), the provocative gesture of his lyricism continues to fascinate readers, and at least a few verses have stuck in the memory of almost everyone from their school days – likely along with information about bohemian student years, stays in Paris, or the mysterious disappearance in the battles on the Galician front at the very beginning of World War I. The authorial personality of František Gellner (1881–1914) offers, however, a much richer spectrum in many respects. The book František Gellner. Text – Image – Context presents Gellner's work from unusual or unknown perspectives and contexts. The aim is to keep in mind Gellner as a creator active in two areas simultaneously – literary and visual – and to present these components of his work as much as possible in their diversity, but also in a strong interconnection. Specific Gellner texts and drawings, including those of a journalistic nature created as ephemera for the daily press, are then continuously illuminated in the interpretation with regard to the contemporary contexts into which these works entered, especially those that evolved over time...
