The fourth volume of The Works of Jaroslav Seifert presents poetry true to its title – it consists of verses that Jaroslav Seifert generally published anonymously in the second half of the 1930s in the social-democratic daily press (Ranní noviny, Právo lidu, Večerník Práva lidu, etc.) after being expelled from the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (1929). In the regular column of the Monday morning newspaper, known as Monday Verses, Seifert responds to current events of various kinds, from the whims of the weather to the sports results of Sunday derbies, political and cultural affairs of the First Republic (activities of Jiří Stříbrný, polemics with J. S. Machar) or the global situation (the rise of Nazi Germany, the Spanish Civil War), as well as more timeless and cyclical themes such as the beginning of the school year or the celebration of May Day, which allows for tracking the development of Seifert's poetic motifs. Some of these verses, illustrated by the prominent caricaturist František Bidlo, were summarized by Jaroslav Seifert in the repeatedly published satirical collection Sung to the Printing Press, and part of these verses is included in The Works of Jaroslav Seifert edited by A.
