With a collection of adapted texts by Petr Šabach, the Adapted Czech Prose series focuses on contemporary Czech prose. The selected ten short stories are based on the books Hovno hoří, Šakalí léta, Babičky, and Čtyři muži na vodě. The texts, united by a humorous storytelling style, explore themes such as family life, interpersonal relationships, and the differing perspectives of men and women. Petr Šabach (1951) is currently one of the most widely read Czech authors, and his prose has inspired several successful films, such as Šakalí léta, Pelíšky, and Pupendo. Each story in the collection is graphically divided into two or more parts. Before reading the next part, the reader can answer questions inserted between the sections, predicting how the story might continue. The questions are intended to inspire the expression of personal thoughts regarding the text, or to facilitate conversation during group work. However, the questions can also be skipped, allowing the texts to be read as a whole. The collection is accompanied by grammatical and lexical exercises for each text, a Czech-English-German-Russian glossary, and an answer key for the exercises.
