Description
The book summarizes texts by Petra Hanáková, Libuše Heczková, Eva Kalivodová, and Kateřina Svatoňová, who, between 2005 and 2011, jointly contemplated the possibilities of gender analysis in literary, film, and cultural theory and criticism within the Center for Gender Studies at Charles University. The texts produced during this time demonstrate the undeniable validity of the gender perspective, but also its pitfalls. The book is divided into three compact – and one might say controversial – parts, whose titles are aptly inspired by Věra Chytilová's film The Fruit of Paradise – "Forbidden Fruit" is dedicated to methods of gender writing, "Expulsion from Paradise" gathers specific film and literary analyses, and "Purgatory" particularly thematizes the intricacies of women's creation. The book combines scholarly articles, reviews, critiques, and interviews published in both academic publications and the daily press. – The photograph on the cover is taken from the Czech film The Call of the Clan (photo by Karel Šebík).
