Grafický román v kontextu německé literární kultury 21. století – Heinrichová Naděžda (2026)

This Czech-language scholarly book traces how the term graphic novel has changed in the German-speaking world since the beginning of the 21st century, developing from a marketing label into a respected literary and artistic category. Once a marginal phenomenon, the graphic novel has become a full-fledged subject of literary research and cultural representation. The book maps its thematic and formal diversity, including works addressing Nazism, the Holocaust, life in the GDR, migration, racism, gender issues and the ecological crisis, as well as intimate, autobiographical and psychological perspectives. Alongside documentary and personal testimonies, it examines fiction and adaptations of canonical literary works. The publication shows that the graphic novel’s strength lies not only in its subjects but also in innovative narrative techniques, including experimental work with images, text and page composition that disrupts linear storytelling and connects individual experience with collective memory. It presents the graphic novel as a key medium between literature and visual art and an important instrument of cultural reflection in the 21st century.
