Description
The monograph Essays from the Border presents six theoretically grounded studies dedicated to concrete poetry as a specific intermedial phenomenon operating at the intersection of text and image, language and visuality, linear reading and spatial perception. The texts reflect the genesis, poetics, and ideological foundations of this movement, which emerged in the 1950s as a response to the linguistic crisis of the post-war avant-garde, and whose reception in the last two decades has gained new intensity in the context of digital culture.
The author focuses on the distinctive features of classical concrete poetry and critically distinguishes it from its frequent popular misinterpretations that confuse it with visual poetry (especially calligrams), typographic experiments (typewriter art), conceptual poetry, or so-called 'vispo.' Emphasis is placed on a comparative perspective that takes into account the differences between national traditions (e.g., the Noigandres group in Brazil, the Ulmer Textgruppe in Germany, or the British concrete movement) and on the analysis of aesthetic and media strategies through which concrete poetry defines itself against discursive language and classical typography.
The essays also address contemporary forms of (post)digital and kinetic concrete...
