Description
Genetics, as a distinct science established at the very beginning of the 20th century, focused its attention on describing crosses and predicting their outcomes. This purpose was served by the newly introduced terminology, which included the concept of a gene. However, the understanding of the gene changed significantly in the first decades of the 20th century. Speculations about its material form and potential divisibility emerged, and interest in its functioning also grew. The individual chapters of this book present specific topics whose study fundamentally influenced the view of the gene: searching for connections between genes and enzymes, disputes over the form of Mendelian notation, research on mutations, or pseudoallelicism, etc. The unsustainability of previous concepts of the gene became fully apparent in the 1940s, when molecular genetics began to make its voice heard.
