Description
The monastery in Louka near Znojmo has a tradition as a significant religious institution, a political-cultural and ecclesiastical-administrative center of the Znojmo region. Czech monarchs, including Přemysl Otakar II, John of Luxembourg, and Charles IV, had a close relationship with the monastery, founded at the end of the 12th century. However, the religious house also experienced troubled times when it found itself nearly on the brink of destruction. The story of this Premonstratensian canonry, lasting several centuries, came to an end with Emperor Joseph II's decision to dissolve it in 1784. The book 'The Seals of the Louka Premonstratensians in the Late Middle Ages and Early Modern Period' examines the fate of the monastery through its seals. These represented a legal tool for identifying individuals or institutions and for verifying documents. Seals are also attractive works of art, used for purposes of self-presentation and representation. The author dedicated several years to searching for them in archives, studying, and conducting detailed analysis. This work follows her book dedicated to the seals of the Premonstratensian monastery in Hradisko near Olomouc, published in 2015.
