This book presents the first original Czech study devoted to the anthropological examination of war as a social and cultural phenomenon, revealing its many layers. In keeping with the anthropological tradition, the author focuses primarily on non-literate societies, rejecting the idea that they are inherently either peaceful or warlike. He critically examines existing approaches to war and warfare and offers ethnographic examples from societies in different cultural areas. The book places the phenomenon of war within broader anthropological understanding, drawing numerous parallels with wars in modern societies and examining psychologically stressful situations that led to the mass dehumanization and killing of people in the 20th century. It also discusses the nature of anthropological knowledge, which has been used as part of strategic approaches in various armed conflicts. The author presents war and warfare as part of humanity’s cultural repertoire while also arguing that humankind is not inherently condemned to wage war, but simply knows how to do so.
