Description
Consciousness is a key mystery of modern science. However, there is still no unequivocal definition of it. The book addresses the question of consciousness from many different perspectives in the form of essays: from philosophical, Christian, Buddhist, and spiritualist texts to essays in the fields of biology, psychiatry, neurology, genetics, and neurosurgery, as well as opinions from physicists, cyberneticians, roboticists, and artificial intelligence experts. A unifying element of all these perspectives seems to be both the necessity of the presence of the so-called inner observer, who observes, evaluates, and experiences the individual's own activity, and the individual's ability to consciously set goals and an 'inner drive' to strive towards these goals. However, these abilities are not and cannot be inherent to computers of today's von Neumann architecture or to inanimate systems in general. Therefore, artificial consciousness in machines cannot (yet) be realized, and we must settle for its more or less faithful computer simulation in the form of a substitute, that is, machine consciousness. Without artificial consciousness, the feared rebellion of machines against humans, the so-called Kurzweilian singularity, can never occur. Research on consciousness helps gradually push the boundaries of research even in the field of general artificial intelligence (AGI).
