Description
In 1970, a mass discovery of denarii from the turn of the 10th and 11th centuries occurred in Hradec Králové. Only a portion of this find – 413 coins – made its way into the numismatic collection of the Museum of Eastern Bohemia. Although it was an extraordinarily important source of information about the history of the early Czech state, the testimony of this source remained hidden from historians for decades. At the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, PhDr. Jarmila Hásková, CSc. managed to thoroughly examine, describe, and evaluate the find of denarii as a whole. Her work remained only in an incomplete manuscript due to the author's untimely death. Given that it is a precise analysis of coins from the denarius period and also a comprehensive interpretation of the valuable find in the context of historical and archaeological knowledge of the early Czech state, Jarmila Hásková's work is being published at least in this editorial edition.

The first chapter discusses both the monetary development of the early Middle Ages and the position of northeastern Bohemia and Hradec Králové at the beginning of the Czech state. In the second chapter, the author presents her hypothesis about the organization of Czech minting...
