Description
The Rivne region lies in western Ukraine and falls under the territory historically known as Volhynia. It is primarily known for the conflict between Poles and Ukrainians during World War II. However, this publication aims to highlight the ethnic issues in broader contexts. The author focuses in the first part on the various political regimes from the 19th century (Imperial Russia, the interwar Polish state, the Soviet and Nazi regimes, and the period of independent Ukraine) and discusses how they attempted to address ethnic tensions in the region. The second part of the publication consists of interviews with witnesses from various ethnic minorities as well as from the majority Ukrainian population. Although today's thinking about ethnic relations in the area is firmly established due to political will, the memories of the witnesses offer us a completely different perspective.
