Description
The Russian medieval ascetic and mystic St. Nil of Sora (1433–1508) has been of interest to contemporary scholars for more than one hundred and fifty years – his works have gradually been translated into most European languages. This publication adds our environment to that list. In the first part of the book, the author focuses on the life of St. Nil, the historical context of his activity, namely Moscow Russia at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, and then analyzes the ascetic's writings not only in the context of Russian medieval culture but also in terms of broader religious relations in the areas of Byzantium, the Balkans, and Eastern Europe, particularly the so-called hesychastic movement. The second part provides translations of all preserved writings by the author. The book also includes four appendices, namely translations of shorter texts related to the life and spiritual legacy of St. Nil.
