Description
All the prose pieces included in this modest anthology are published in Czech for the very first time. They belong to the first period of the author's work, that is, the time when Roth's writing was dominated by a pessimistic to nihilistic attitude towards the state of the post-war world. The very first short story captures the atmosphere of loss of home, in which the narrator vainly tries to weave together the threads of diverging stories. The undated 'Sick Humanity', a visually harrowing, almost expressionistic prose, depicts a picture of general chaos. The short story 'April' from 1925 has a dreamy, almost darkly romantic atmosphere, stemming from a fairy-tale fascination with the feminine element. Perhaps the most significant text in the anthology is 'Strawberries', a textual fragment from 1929, which the author originally intended to expand into a novel form. In 'Strawberries', the harmonious element remains intact and in full force, like a glimpse into a lost childhood, into a world that has long ceased to exist.
