How are we to understand the meaning of the created gift of being, if its giver is God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit? How does our understanding of reality change if its meaning is trinitarian self-giving? The author approaches these and other questions in connection with the entire work of Klaus Hemmerle from a christological perspective. The theological and practical following of Jesus Christ leads us to the mystery of his self-giving. By mediating the reality of God's interpersonal love to the utmost, Christ's self-giving becomes the starting point for a renewed understanding of being in Christian ontology or metaphysics. Therefore, the author first explores various historical forms of the relationship between christology and metaphysics. Against this background, he identifies the specific significance of Klaus Hemmerle's work, emphasizing its connection with Hemmerle's Christian life, activity, and service. The systematic uncovering of the christological foundation of Klaus Hemmerle's trinitarian ontology points to Christian metaphysics as a metaphysics of suffering and love, which opens up in the horizon of being defined on one side by the abyssal 'why' of all suffering, and on the other side by the abyssal and extreme love that takes this suffering upon itself.
