This Czech-language monograph examines contemporary identity and its historical roots in three studies. The first defines Central Europe through the cultural development and historical connections of the region, presenting it as an independent part of European civilization. The second explores perceptions of Russia and Russians across the full range of texts and statements in Czech public discourse and seeks to challenge those perceptions. The third considers developments since November 1989, the relationship of the Czech and broader Central European space to the so-called West, and the key principles and prospects of contemporary identity. The book combines an academic and essayistic style, analyzing and extensively commenting on a wide range of texts and sources while supplementing them with personal observations.
