Description
In the Sepik River basin in New Guinea, the fate of a newly born child was decided by a man's word: 'to wash' or 'not to wash.' The book opens the theme of childbirth as a social and cultural phenomenon. Childbirth is, in itself, a phenomenon independent of culture; however, at different times and in various cultures, 'guaranteed correct' ideas arise about how people should come into this world. The collective monograph Childbirth opens up the topics of the cultural shaping of childbirth while also showing the limits of cultural constructivism. Apart from death, when we leave the world, there is no stronger theme than how we come into the world.
