Description
Is the Smutná River really that sad and is the Hluchý Stream completely deaf? How did the name of the Šance dam come about? And is the Černá Ostravice really darker than the Bílá Ostravice? What is actually the most common motivation for naming watercourses and bodies of water? Answers to these questions and many other pieces of information can be found in the monograph Hydronymy of the Ostravice Basin (names of rivers, streams, ponds, and springs) by Kristýna Kovářová, who works at the Department of Czech Language at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ostrava. Based on information primarily obtained from cartographic sources, the book aims to raise awareness of geographical names in the basin of the Ostravice River, which flows through the Moravian-Silesian Region. It shows that the proper names of geographical objects preserve stories about the history of the landscape, the ways of settling individual places, and the lives of the people who named them in the past.
